The material you choose changes everything. The same ornament file looks warm and rustic in birch plywood, sharp and modern in black acrylic, and soft in felt. So before you press start, let's look at what works and what does not.

This is general advice. Every machine is a little different, so always test a small piece first.

Plywood: the safe choice

If you are not sure, start with thin plywood, around 3 mm. It is cheap, it cuts clean, it is easy to find and it takes paint and stain well. Many makers use birch or basswood plywood because the surface is smooth and the inside layers are even.

Good for: almost everything. Ornaments, gift tags, lamps, village houses, advent calendars.

Watch out for: very cheap plywood with uneven glue. It can cut badly in some spots, leave dark edges or not cut through everywhere. If one corner never cuts through, the sheet is often the problem, not your settings.

MDF: smooth, but smoky

MDF has an even surface, so it is great for painting. It is also cheap.

Good for: painted ornaments, signs and anything you want to cover with color.

Watch out for: MDF makes more smoke and dark edges than plywood. Make sure your ventilation works well, and wipe the edges before painting.

Acrylic: for shine

Acrylic catches the tree lights and looks great as snowflakes, stars and baubles. Mirror acrylic and glitter acrylic are fun for ornaments.

Good for: shiny ornaments, layered pieces, lamp parts.

Watch out for: not every laser can cut every acrylic. Many hobby diode lasers cannot cut clear acrylic well, while CO2 lasers can. Check what your machine supports. Also, keep the protective paper on while cutting if the manual says so, and peel it after.

Cardboard and thick paper: cheap and quick

This is a great way to test a design before you waste wood. It is also nice for cards, tags and light box layers.

Good for: tests, cards, gift tags, light boxes.

Watch out for: paper burns easily, so use low power and never leave the machine alone.

Felt and leather

Some lasers cut felt and real leather well, and they make cozy ornaments and small stockings.

Watch out for: never cut PVC or vinyl, and be careful with "fake leather", because some types contain PVC. Those can release harmful fumes and damage your machine. If you are not sure what a material is made of, do not cut it.

Pick the right thickness

Many files are made for a certain thickness, for example 3 mm. A small difference can make slots too loose or too tight. Always check the product page for the recommended thickness, and measure your sheet with calipers if you have them.

If a joint is too tight, sand it lightly. If it is too loose, use a little glue.

Finishing ideas

A plain wooden piece is already pretty, but a little finish helps:

Safety first

Never leave a running laser alone. Keep a fire extinguisher close, use good ventilation and read your machine manual. Wood and paper can catch fire quickly.
